Earth Day: Nature’s Roots in Positive Body Image

Earth Day gives us a chance to demonstrate support for environmental protection and to express our gratitude for nature. At Ldn Dares, we are grateful for the lessons we can take from nature to help us nurture a positive body image.

Researchers have known for quite some time that immersion in nature positively impacts our physical and mental health, but studies also show that time spent in nature directly improves body image [1].

How does nature help us to feel more comfortable in our own skin?

Relieving the pressure

Nature provides a release from societal expectations and pressure. Stepping outside allows us to let go of thoughts about how we should look.

Immersing ourselves in nature reminds us that imperfection is beautiful. The trees, flowers, and clouds that we see do not conform to rigid expectations, yet their unruly lines, soft curves, and flaking branches are beautiful. We are all a part of this diverse, beautiful landscape and we all belong here.

Shifting focus

When we liberate ourselves in nature we begin to see our bodies as so much more than what they look like. Our bodies can do so many amazing things, we should appreciate and respect them, not put them down.

Protecting ourselves and our environment

Feeling a connectedness with nature manifests improved body image. This is because we “see a similarity in terms of nature requiring protection and the body requiring protection” [2].

Earth Day is all about showing support for environmental protection. With a world which does so much to protect its humans mental health, body image, and wellbeing it’s important that we do our part to give back [3].
